DEL CANTE DE LAS MINAS
GALA DE GANADORES y ENTREGA DE PREMIOS

Saturday in La Unión, being the last day of the festival, there were no parallel activities. An atmosphere of tense calm could be felt throughout the day in this mining town which, without being Andalusian, annually organizes one of the most important flamenco events in the world.
After five magnificent gala shows in which there was something for everyone, from the popular Niña Pastori to the charismatic Capullo de Jerez or the recital of Vicente Amigo who received this year’s tribute, there were three days of semifinals in which 30 people participated. The final was held Saturday night with 19 artists that included 12 singers, 3 dancers, 2 guitarists and 2 instrumentalists.
As in other years, after a long series of performances in which the last contestant was bowing at 4:45 in the morning, the atmosphere in the Cathedral of Cante was charged with expectation while the panel of judges deliberated. We all waited for the signal that the winners had been selected; less than a half hour was needed to decide the fate of these people who had spent years of sacrifice preparing for this moment.
The Lámpara Minera, highest award of the festival, had four suitors this year in the final phase, but it was Códroba singer Rafael Carlos Espejo Moreno “Churumbaque Hijo” who had the pleasure and pride of collecting the coveted trophy after three previous attempts, in addition to fifteen thousand euros in cash.
The Desplante, top dance prize, plus ten thousand euros, were for Ana Morales Moreno from Seville. In addition to the obligatory taranto, she danced alegrías and guajiras with singers Juan José Amador, Jeromo Segura and Niño de Elche, and guitarists Oscar Lagos and Eugenio Iglesias.
Catalonian guitarist José Andrés Cortés Fernández won the Bordón Minero and six thousand euros, and first place in the new contest for instrumentalists, with three thousand five hundred euros, was for pianist Borja Muñoz “Borja Évora”.
