“Fragua Futura” marks a return to recordings |
Those people who attended the presentation of the record “Fragua
Futura” on Tuesday, October 28th in Madrid’s Cardamomo
club were able to enjoy a sampling of this new work where artists
who never before recorded on their own, both veterans and new faces,
interpret a varied repertoire that includes some very flamenco pieces,
others mixed with funk rhythms, some sweet catchy tangos, even a
fado.

With his well-cured playing style Pepe Montoyita interpreted the
bulerías from the record with the voice of Estrella Morente,
the dance of Joaquín Cortés and the special collaboration
of football (soccer) player Raúl González and bullfighters
Enrique Ponce and Javier Conde on palmas and choruses. For the live
performance El Negri offered his stylized playing. Afterwards Montoyita
accompanied his cousin Miguel Carbonell for one of the most traditional
pieces from the recording, a taranta called “Los gitanos”.
Yonhy Cortés represented the four singers who sing the bulerías
“Anochecer”. Young Triana Heredia, daughter of Ray Heredia,
lent her promising voice to the tangos “No queda nada”
perfectly complemented by the singing of her mother María
Heredia and aunts las Negris. Lastly, the group Kímica mostly
made up of the youngest members of well-known flamenco families
like the Carmonas and the Carbonells sang their melodic theme “Darnos
de la mano amor”. The record also contains the fado interpreted
by María Berasarte and Niño Josele who also accompanies
Salomé Pavón in some tangos. Los Malaguita, Antonio
“El Negri”, Manuel Parrilla and Diego del Morao round
out the list of participating artists.

The record was produced by Enrique Heredia “Negri”
and Javier Limón for the Nuevos Medios label. During the
decade of the nineties this company put out the collection “Jóvenes
Flamencos” which was highly regarded because it made an entire
generation of artists known to the general public. Now in the twenty-first
century this “Fragua Futura” hopes to carry on the work.
“I believe that Nuevos Medios is an important source of
young flamenco artists” says Enrique Heredia “Negri”.
“It’s where new flamenco is coming from and we need
it to keep yielding its fruit because maybe not everyone becomes
famous, but you can be sure some of these people are going to make
it” explains Javier Limón. The idea for the recording
came out of the work both men are doing in the recording studio.
“We have a studio we use to record a variety of things,
a lot of people pass through and we kind of saw where the younger
generation was going, we talked to the ones we liked and tried to
cover every angle we think flamenco now has” adds Javier
Limón. “There are new people like Kímica
or Los Malaguita for example, and then there are important stars
of the guitar like Manuel Parrilla and Montoyita” clarifies
El Negri. His own niece Triana Heredia is one of the newcomers.
Although she’s only 14 this experience might be the deciding
factor in encouraging her to become a professional musician.
“Yes, I think these records are important so that in the future
we can see how we started out. The fact is, I am very enthused about
the whole thing” says Triana. With this new record the
future generation of flamenco artists is already in the oven.
