The magic of each generation

Fernando Terremoto
hardly needs amplification as his voice is sheer power. When he
stood up to sing fandangos away from the mike he demonstrated what
a strong flamenco voice is all about and more importantly, a profound
and expressive voice. On the third day of the Caja de Madrid festival
the Jerez singer started out with soleá, with those moving
melodic turns that characterize his cante, as in the malagueña
or seguiriya. A voice which hints at the greatness of his father’s
heritage, with a profound and natural sound in a truly traditional
manner. Bulerías brought the good solid Jerez sound with
corresponding dance. A well-planned and well-delivered performance.

 

A singing style which is flamenco through
and
through, and a touching, moving freshness.

 

Singer
Miguel Poveda was at his best. Giving his all, the man from Catalonia
started out with his strong suit, mineras, and applause sprinkled
all the while. Poveda’s voice is extraordinarily warm and
rich, with fine, well-administered shading. Here we have a young
singer who grows with each performance and adds touching, moving
freshness to a singing style which is flamenco through and through.
Despite his youth he is a seasoned veteran. Malagueñas, cantiñas
and a toná from don Antonio Mairena sung with powerful abandon
and tremendous depth demonstrating his knowledge, ability and personality
in a wide range of flamenco forms. This singer was, without a doubt,
the one who left the most profound and eloquent mark on the audience.

It’s
been quite some time since Gabriel Moreno sang in Spain’s
capital, and the man from Jaén made a point of saying how
pleased he was to be back. A recognized connoisseur of cante, he
showed what he could do with malagueñas, seguiriya, tangos
and soleá, shining especially bright with Levante cante,
taranto, levantica and taranta. Playing subtly with the tones, his
particular way with the melodies was restrained and refined. Although
the concert was running late, Gabriel Moreno couldn’t hold
himself back for some bulerías to wind up the night.
