The evening of November 12, the jury for the Flamenco Awards “Calle de Alcalá” celebrated annually in Madrid, and honoring flamenco artists who have carried out most of their careers in Spain’s capital, voted to award the distinction for 2010 to guitarist Enrique de Melchor.

The honorific award, consisting of a flamenco sculpture by well-known paint and sculptor Mauricio Jiménez Larios, is to be presented during the 18th edition of the Festival Flamenco Caja Madrid which will be celebrated the third week of February 2010 at the Teatro Circo Price.

The jury was made up of José Manuel Caballero Bonald, Félix Grande Lara, José Mª Velázquez-Gaztelu, Ángel Álvarez Caballero, Manuel Ríos Ruiz and Francisco Gutiérrez Carbajo, with secretary Alejandro Reyes Domene Rodríguez, director of Cultyart, who organizes the festival which is an initiative of the Obra Social of Caja Madrid.

The Calle de Alcalá award was previously conceded to other guitarists such as Juan Carmona Habichuela (1995), Paco de Lucía (1998), Manolo Sanlúcar (2001), Paco Cepero (2004) and Victor Monge Serranito (2007).

This year, the news is that the Culture Department of the Obra Social Caja Madrid has provided for an Honorary Award with variable frequency which this year will go to José Manuel Caballero Bonald, writer and poet, for his important work in the defense, promotion and dissemination of flamenco, and which will be presented during the course of the festival.
