Fiesta de la Bulería of Jerez

Now entering its forty-first year, the Fiesta de la Bulería of Jerez for 2008 is scheduled to be celebrated Saturday, September 13th at the city’s bullring, within the program of the yearly Fiestas de la Vendimia celebrating the grape harvest.

The fiesta finale of the summer season, the mother of all bulerías fiestas that anually attracts thousands of flamenco fans to the biggest flamenco happening on the planet, as far as the size of the audience is concerned, this year is taking no chances, and the organización has put together a bill that is bound to fill the bull-ring.  Two major cult figures, Capullo de Jerez and el Torta are slated for a friendly tug-of-war that will attract interest beyond the music itself.  Both are charismatic artists, each in his own way, and if you add the presence of Antonio el Pipa, the most popular Jerez dancer, there aren’t likely to be too many empty seats.  The program will be rounded out with the powerful singer Elu de Jerez, one of the most important female voices in the city, in addition to Esperanza Fernández.

This year brings the novelty of opening directly with dance, instead of the typical group of older ladies or the families.  Antonio el Pipa will offer his successful work “De Tablao”, a fanciful recreation of the ambience of a typical tablao.  In the face of criticism in recent years from audience and jouranlists alike, the organization has expressed its intention to offer a more professional production without so many glitches and with good quality of sound.
