POETRY AS MUSIC

With the Eurobuilding as a backdrop, a sort of symbol of economic power, the Olivar de Castillejo seems like a natural reserve that miraculously escaped the real estate speculation that surrounds it.  For the second year, this space harbors the series “La Música de los Espejos”.

What it is, is a facing-off, or perhaps a dialogue between poetry and flamenco.  A “project which is open to infinite possibilities” as José María Velázquez Gaztelu, director of the series, commented.  We were immersed in a different atmosphere, poetic, absolutely relaxing and tremendously attractive.

“This place is a real wonder” said Luís Eduardo Aute speaking before the show.  With his customary red shirt, and his hair and beard a bit whiter, the multitalented Aute came on without his guitar.  It was El Bola who manned the instrument to accompany Marina Heredia.  “I tried to get the ‘duende’, catch that special flamenco moment”.  “Flamenco itself is poetry”. “The mix of raw emotion and subtlety in flamenco is the stuff of poetry”, thus spoke the singer-composer between songs.

The poem “Volver al Agua” was answered by Marina Heredia with another: the “Balada del que nunca fue a Granada” written by Alberti.  In “Lugar Común”, Aute appealed to death, and the girl from Granada answered with “Illo y Romero”. “No la boca, sino el beso” recited the poet: “El Calor de un Beso” was the singer’s answer.  And so it went on, for one hour, that officially ended with the classic “Al Alba” that Aute sang with more feeling than ever – no doubt the influence of being around flamenco – and Marina Heredia joined in.

Thus began this new edition of the series “La Música de los Espejos”, one of the jewels of the Festival Suma Flamenca de la Comunidad de Madrid.  Still to come are Felipe Benítez Reyes-Arcángel, Luís García Montero-Morete and José Luís Ortiz Nuevo-Carmen Linares.  An authentic treat, although we’ll have to rejoice softly, like a little secret, so that this privileged corner of the Paseo de la Castellana continues to breathe freely.

“La mentira y el dinero viven en palacio de lujo…” was one of the lines of a fandango Marina Heredia offered as an encore, with the Eurobuilding behind her.
