The Festival Suma Flamenca 2015 has been presented, the flamenco festival of the Comunidad de Madrid now in its tenth year.

From June 3 to 30, with an extensive program of more than 34 different shows which will be presented in 23 venues within the province of Madrid.

The focus of the program is at the Teatros del Canal where in the Sala Roja six shows with major stars will take place. On Tuesday the 9th, singer José Mercé presents Íntimo y Flamenco; on the following day, June 10th Flamenco 5 Estrellas will bring together dancers Lola Greco, Jesús Carmona, Karime Amaya, Sergio Bernal and Ana Arroyo.
Singing takes center stage on Thursday the 11th with Arcángel in Olor a tierra, and Friday the 12th with El Niño of Rocío Márquez. Two dancers from Madrid complete the dance offering: Olga Pericet who will premiere Pisadas, Saturday the 13th, and Antonio Canales with Una Moneda de dos Caras, on Sunday the 14th.

At the Teatro de la Abadía, second headquarters of the festival, once again the Sala Juan de la Cruz will have shows such as Classic.

Flamenco from Israel with soprano Sivan Rotem and guitarist Barak Olier, for Tuesday the 23rd, and the return to Madrid of guitarist Rafael Riqueni, Wednesday the 24th. On the following day there is a double program with the guitar of Daniel Casares in Picassares with the voice of Paco del Pozo in Una copla para el recuerdo.

Friday the 26th for the first time in Madrid, a young star of dance, El Yiyo will perform, and it will be with the backing of his teacher El Güito in the show Esencias Flamencas. Singer Rosario ‘La Tremendita’ will present Fatum, Saturday the 27th, and closing the week, Sunday the 28th, Camerata Flamenco Project with guest artist Carmen Linares.

Three concerts of flamenco/jazz make up a thematic block that brings together great musicians of jazz and flamenco. The first of these on Sunday the 21st, at the Sala Verde of the Teatros del Canal joining UHF with Dutch musicians Oene Van Geel, Maarten Ornstein and Tony Roe in a co-production with the Biennale de los Países Bajos. The Teatro Fernando de Rojas of the Círculo de Bellas Artes is the second venue for these concerts, on Friday the 26th, the creative guitar of Pepe Habichuela and the flute of Jorge Pardo will present Flamenco Universal, followed on Saturday the 27th by the concert Flamenco Ensamble with guitarist Gerardo Núñez and guest artist Antonio Serrano on harmonica.

The festival also brings three fine shows to be presented at venues officially denominated World Cultural Treasures: on Friday the 5th, Silvia Pérez Cruz will present Granada at the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares; on Saturday June 20th, Juan Valderrama will present Andalamerica at the Teatro Real Carlos III in Aranjuez, and the same day, classic and flamenco guitar will be represented by Miguel Ángel Córtes and José María Gallardo at San Lorenzo in El Escorial.

Two other venues of the Comunidad de Madrid will receive two young artists. Singer Antonio Ingueta will offer his Noche Flamenca at the Centro de Humanidades of La Cabrera on June 6th, and dancer Nino de los Reyes presents Inside at the Centro Cultural Paco Rabal Saturday June 27th.

Madrid's municipal government supports Suma Flamenca

At the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, throughout the month of June, there will be shows by Rojas y Rodríguez, Pedro Córdoba, Larreal, Compañía Andanzas con Merche Esmeralda, Vallellano & Royal Gypsy Orchestra, Compañía de Esther Esteban, Rocío Bazán y Virginia Gámez, La Lupi, Daniel Doña, Manuel Liñán, Vicente Soto ‘Sordera’, Jesús Carmona&Cia., Montse Cortés and Edit Salazar. For the children, Teresa del Pozo and José Luis Montón will present on Saturdays, in afternoon performances, the show Flamenco Kids en el Jalintro; at the Hall of the Sala Guirau the exhibit Antonio Gades ’50 años de danza española’ can be visited, and during the month of June there will be 5 master classes.
Also at the Teatros del Canal, there will be a rehearsal workshop on June 12, 13 and 14, a workshop for teachers ‘Flamenco en el aula’ given by the Fundación Antonio Gades and educator Silvia Marín.  And from the 9th to the 14th, in the Hall of the Sala Roja, visual artist David Vaamonde will express his idea of El flamenco con Tinta China, a magnificent work with his original take on flamenco.

The flamenco activities will be completed with a series of film projections at the Cineteca del Matadero. The series includes Paco de Lucía, la Búsqueda, and El Flamenco También es Cosa de Niños, en la Sala Azcona, on June 15th and 16th respectively; and Flamenco de Raíz, at the Sala Borau on June 17th.

 


This year nine tablaos and clubs will open daily to receive Suma Flamenca: Corral de la Morería, Casa Patas, Cardamomo, Candela, Café de Chinitas, Las Carboneras, Las Tablas, Torres Bermejas and Tablao Flamenco Villa Rosa.  They will host singing, dance and guitar shows, some of them with a double session, and others with afterhours performances.

 

Once again four clubs from the association La Noche en Vivo, will present flamenco evenings with daring new shows.  This includes four Madrid venues: Barco, Fulanita de Tal, Off de La Latina and Rincón del Arte Nuevo.
