With the loss of Rosita Segovia the world of Spanish dance has lost a historic figure

Rosa Balcells, known professionally as Rosita Segovia, of Catalonian origin, has died at the age of 83.

Her career included two important and well-defined stages. First, as partner to the legendary dancer Antonio Ruiz with whose group she debuted exactly fifty years ago and with whom she toured the world for nearly twenty. Her performances in El Amor Brujo and The Three-Cornered Hat were much-admired and her talents have been preserved in three films.

After leaving the company she developed her teaching and choreographic talents creating a large repertoire of work which was eventually presented in North America and Europe. She was known for her innovative take on Spanish dance, and her perspective brought a new dimension to the genre.
