Sara Baras turns the mythical monster Medusa flamenco.
The director, choreographer and dancer debuts the show “Medusa, la Guardiana”, at the Festival de Mérida, a completely different show compared to previous works by this company, and the music is by Keko Baldomero.
Sara Baras puts a flamenco soul to the mythical Medusa in her much-awaited debut at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida. The director, choreographer and dancer will debut at the Teatro Romano in Mérida with her show Medusa, la Guardiana, which is on the bill through July 13th, based on the myth of the horrible monstrous priestess condemned to turn to stone anyone who should gaze upon her.
“Medusa, la Guardiana” is the first show Sara Baras has created based on Greek and Roman mythology, and she has done so precisely with a character traditionally presented as negative and ugly, who now, by way of flamenco and this great dancer, has acquired a new dimension, somewhat less monstrous.
The dancer has pointed out that the show, which will be seen for the first time by the audience of Mérida, is full of classic and contemporary moments, with choreography based more on interpretation than movement.
On stage, Sara Baras is accompanied by Córdoba dancer José Serrano as guest artist in the role of Perseus, and Juan Carlos Vellido, as well as nine other dancers to complete the cast.
“This woman, who is no one without her Perseus, even though it is he who beheads her, can only find peace and freedom through death”, explained Sara Baras.
The world premiere of Sara Baras’ show is the second great staging for the 60th edition of the Festival de Mérida after the success of the opera Salomé of Richard Strauss last week.
