The series Noches Brujas continues to bring Saturday performances to the Morería throughout the month of June.  Last night, we had a little soccer hangover for the recital of a singer with flamenco pedigree.  Tomás de Perrate, nearly debuting in Madrid, offered a very orthodox vision of cante through the Utrera perspective.

Although he was somewhat exhausted from having just arrived from the long trip to the capital, Tomás gathered strength from the opening tonás to the sensational bulerías finale with cuplé.  “I’ve come to Madrid with the greatest expectations, and I’m not leaving without giving all I’ve got” declared Tomás to the packed audience just before a brief intermission.

He interpreted tientos, soleá, siguiriya and some fine cantiñas before the fiesta finale where he got revved up and found the “soníos negros”, the elusive black sound.  Guitarist Antonio Moya was exceptional at every moment, evoking the guitar sound of Morón de la Frontera and backing up Tomás for his mixture of cante from the house of Pinini, Perrate and Torre.  Wonderful.
