XXXIX Gazpacho Andaluz de Morón de la Frontera

This year when new flamenco festivals are being inaugurated left and right, the pioneers of these events continue to be celebrated and reinvent themselves. New formulas for some, tried and true for others, all the organizations are scrambling to preserve and protect this classic format which brightens up Spain’s hottest months for flamenco fans. The last Saturday of August, with only the Festival de Mairena and the Fiesta de la Bulería remaining to finish out the summer season, Morón de la Frontera will celebrate its 39th Gazpacho Andaluz.

The organizers have managed
to put together a well-rounded program. From Jerez de la Frontera, two
very popular figures: Capullo de Jerez and La Macanita. From El Puerto,
the grand veteran Pansequito will give his unmistakable touch with a voice
full of subtlety and tradition.

Dance will be ably represented by Lidia Valle and her group. Born in
Morón, with a long career under her belt despite her youth, Valle
is yet another name from the long list of professional flamenco dancers
this town has produced, including Juana Amaya and Juan de Juan.

The new kids on the block who made good, Son de la Frontera will offer
their original blend of guitar, Cuban tres, voice, dance and percussion,
all inspired in the sounds of guitarist Diego del Gastor, a native of
Gastor but considered to be from Morón de la Frontera where he
spent the greater part of his life. The group’s recent recording
has surprised and delighted flamenco-lovers, due in large part to the
able incorporation of the Cuban tres played by the group’s leader
Raúl Rodríguez, son of singer Martirio. The other members
of the formation are all Morón natives: Paco de Amparo on guitar,
Pepe Torres, dance, Manuel Flores, palmas and dance and the cante of Moi
de Morón.

The festival will be presented by the popular Manuel Curado.
