When the first Christmas sweets have just begun to appear on supermarket shelves, and it’s three and half months until the beginning of the Festival de Jerez, at midday today the official presentation of the fifteenth edition of the most important flamenco and Spanish dance festival in the world took place.
The formalities were at the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez de la Frontera where as winter draws to a close we will see some of the most noteworthy flamenco artists in the specialities of dance, cante, guitar and the new tendencies.
With the presence of artists Luis Moneo, Jesús Méndez and the recently honored dance teacher Angelita Gómez among others, Dolores Barroso, head of the Jerez Culture department, spoke at length about the importance of the festival, before turning the mike over to Paulino Plata, chief representative of the Andalucia Cultural Department, who also offered a detailed and favorable evaluation of the merits of this festival, not only within Spain, but internationally as well. And of course he underlined the almost certain naming of flamenco to be included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage art-forms.
Festival director Isamay Benavente pointed out the current diverse offering in flamenco, and how easy it was to fill the program with high-quality talent. Among the major shows to be presented at the Teatro Villamarta are artists such as La Farruca, Javier Barón, Javier Latorre, Manuela Carrasco and Belén Maya among many others. Miguel Poveda, just about everyone’s favorite singer in this first decade of the new milennium, will bring his show “Historias de Viva Voz”. The inaugural recital features the most international figure from Jerez, Antonio el Pipa, and the closing gala is the responsibility of Eva Yerbabuena with her work “Cuando Yo Era…” which recently debuted within the program of the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla.
This year the Bodega de los Apóstoles will not have shows, but in addition to the main theater, festival venues include the Sala Compañía, the Palacio Villavivencio, the Sala Paúl and the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, not to mention the many flamenco peñas with their afterhours shows and the daily gatherings at the Bodega San Ginés.
A diverse program of courses and workshops, including a series for older persons, fills out this event which once again will fill the city of Jerez with flamenco fans.
