The Jerez flamenco community is behind Moneo and Parrilla

Manuel Moneo Lara (Jerez de la Frontera, 1950) and Manuel Fernández Molina “Parrilla de Jerez” (Jerez de la Frontera, 1945), two patriarchs of great Jerez flamenco dynasties are in the hospital in Jerez with serious health problems, and the entire flamenco community has closed spiritual ranks in wishing a favorable evolution for both artis

Manuel
Moneo is the brother of Juan Moneo “El Torta”, and other flamenco
performers in the family are El Barullo, Macarena, Rocío, Luis,
Juan and José Manuel Moneo and Chico Pacote. From the San Miguel
neighborhood, his cante reflects the flavor of the “plazuela”
as San Miguel is known, and also shows a powerful influence of Antonio
Mairena. He specializes in basic cantes such as soleá, siguiriyas,
tonás, bulerías and bulería por soleá, being
one of the very few to conserve the unusual Carapiera style in major key.
Manuel Moneo sings a spectacular martinete in Carlos Saura’s film
“Flamenco”.

Parrilla de Jerez, another of San Miguel’s sons, is a guitar institution
in his hometown as well as outside. He played for some of flamenco’s
greatest singers such as Tío Borrico, Sordera, Terremoto, Sernita,
La Perla de Cádiz, Manuel Agujetas, Antonio Mairena and El Chocolate,
but more than thirty years accompanying Paquera de Jerez painted the indelible
image of this artistic couple in the collective memory of flamenco fans.
Parrilla is a talented fiesta dancer and at the last Bienal he danced
a lengthy bulería to the recorded voice of Paquera which left no
one unmoved at the Teatro de la Maestranza the night of the closing gala.

The staff of Deflamenco sends warm regards to Manuel Moneo and Manuel
Parrilla and their families, wishing them a quick recovery.
