A total of 28 aspirants will perform August 13th, 14th and 15 at the Catedral del Cante to compete for a place in the finals.
The Fundación Cante de las Minas has announced the names of the semifinalists for this year’s contests of the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas de La Unión in its 54th edition.
More tan 170 artists signed up to vie for the prizes in singing, guitar, dance and instrumentalist, and from these, the jury selected 50 individuals. That initial selection has been whittled down to a total of 28 artists.
All were chosen from selective auditions held in June and July in Albacete, Granada, Valladolid, Sagunto, Murcia and Madrid.
Fifteen singers will compete for the “Lámpara Minera”, the festival’s highest prize; 3 guitarists for the “Bordón Minero”; 6 dancers for the “Desplante”; and 4 instrumentalists for the “Filón”.
On this occasion, the jury deciding the winners will be made up of:
Blanca Ávila Molina, “Blanca del Rey”. Cordoban dancer and choreographer. Holder of the “Premio Nacional de Flamenco” from the Cátedra de Flamencología de la Universidad de Jerez, y propietaria del mítico tablao flamenco “El Corral de la Morería” de Madrid.
Juan Verdú Zabía. Director of the SUMA Flamenca Festival in Madrid. Journalist and writer, flamenco expert.
Ramón Soler Díaz. A teacher from Málaga, he has devoted many years of his life to the investigation of flamenco, and is the author of several books on the topic.
Antonio Parra Pujante. Writer, journalist and flamencologist. A regular collaborator of the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas.
José Cros Zaplana. Known in La Unión as Pepe Cros, he is the son of the great Pencho Cros, three-time winner of the Lámpara Minera. José Cros inherited his father’s artistic legacy and deep knowledge of mining cantes.
The 28 aspirants will perform August 13th through 15th as shown below at the Cathedral of Cante hoping to earn a spot in the grand finale of the Festival:
