Presentation of the Seventeenth ‘Concurso de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba’

Friday, January 30th at the Sala de Telares of the Gran Teatro saw the
presentation of the seventeeth Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba,
a triannual event organized by Córdoba’s municipal government
and the Fundación Pública Municipal Gran Teatro de Córdoba,
sponsored on this occasion by the Consejería de Cultura de la Junta
de Andalucía and the Diputación de Córdoba. This
seventeenth edition of what is generally considered to be the main reference
for flamenco contests and which establishes three areas of competition,
cante, dance and guitar, will be held at the Gran Teatro from April 25th
to May 8th of this year.

The presentation was attended by Córdoba mayor Rosa Aguilar, the
head of the department of Culture and president of the FPM Gran Teatro,
Luis Rodríguez, Culture advisor Carmen Calvo and vice-president
of the Córdoba Diputación, Rafael Velasco. At the official
act there were familiar faces of earlier winners such as guitarist Manolo
Sanlúcar and dancer Mario Maya.

Parallel activities to the contest include shows such as Elvira Andrés’
“Colores”, Joaquín Grilo’s “Tiempo”
and Antonio Canales’ “Tarantos” to be presented by the
Ballet Nacional de España under the direction of Elvira Andrés.
In addition, Joaquín Grilo will present his new work called “Grilo”.
Native Córdoban artists such as Luis de Córdoba, Manuel
Silveria, Antonio Alcázar, Paco Serrano and Victoria Palacios will
present a show called “Arte que hace historia” on May 7th,
in addition to the already premiered “Historias de Arte” with
Matilde Coral, Chano Lobato and Juan Habichuela in collaboration with
José Luis Ortiz Nuevo..
