Nimes Festival Flamenco

January 22-27, 2007

Each January the organization of
the venerable Nimes Festival in the south of France offers one of the
most prestigious and long-lived flamenco festivals in France. This year,
with a line-up full of top stars and carefully chosen young ones on the
rise, after-hours flamenco and a cultural program of conferences as well
as dance and guitar classes, the Nimes Festival has nothing to envy of
other similar events.

From
Camarón de la Isla to Enrique Morente who will sing in Nimes this
year for the first time, all of flamenco’s greats have performed
on these stages in a city with historical affinity for Spanish culture.

On Monday the 22nd, the festival opens with a splendid dialogue between
a Jerez veteran, Fernando de la Morena with the guitar of Diego del Morao,
and a young man from southern France, Antonio Negro, with his classic-style
cante. Tuesday brings another shared recital with the dancing of Fuensanta
«La Moneta» and the Marseilles singer, Juan de la Alpujarra.

Wednesday features the spectacular dancing of Pepe Torres, from the popular
group Son de la Frontera, with Moi de Morón and David el Galli
singing, and Rafael Rodríguez and Paco Iglesias on guitar, and
the solid singing of Cancanilla de Marbella accompanied by guitarist Antonio
Moya, «Málaga to Morón» as the show is titled.

In the large Nimes municipal theater, Thursday January 25th is the night
of Andrés Marín who will present his most recent creation
«El Alba del Último Día», which recently premiered
at the Seville Bienal, with the backup of José Valencia, Segundo
Falcón, Salvador Gutiérrez, Pablo Suárez and Antonio
Coronel, and Friday the 26th will be devoted to the universal man from
Granada, Enrique Morente, with the accompaniment of Alfredo Lagos, in
addition to percussion and chorus.

The gala closing show will be held in the theater with the maestro Fosforito
accompanied by Antonio Soto on the guitar, and the dancing of Mercedes
Ruiz and Manuel Liñán, with the noteworthy singing of José
Valencia, Jesús Méndez and David Palomar.
