New Flamenco Festival in Morón de la Frontera, Seville. September 8th to 10th.

Young flamenco followers in Morón are preparing a new point of encounter with flamenco in this enigmatic corner of Andalusia, charged with magnetism. The Flamenco en la Frontera festival aims to be an event that makes Morón a place in which to become acquainted with, share and enjoy the art of flamenco, just as happened throughout an extended time in the past. Morón has always maintained a privileged place within the history of flamenco. Famous artists were from this town, and some of the most important ones spent extended periods. From el Fillo, la Andonda, Silverio Franconetti and el Tenazas, right up to Paco del Gastor, Dieguito de Morón, Juana Amaya, and most recently, Son de la Frontera, Jairo Barrull, Pepe Torres, Moisés Cano, David el Galli and Dani de Morón. Flamenco en la Frontera aims to be a festival which unites new and old, traditional and experimental. With this objective in mind, there is a complete program of recitals, conferences, courses, documentaries, exhibits and afterhours performances to conform a new “frontera” where the place and the context, Morón de la Frontera, provide the necessary ambience to celebrate each one of those moments that only direct contact with the art can provide. With a double program of shows, distributed between the municipal theater and the patio of the Casa de la Cultura, this first edition features dancers Jairo Barrull, Pepe Torres and Antonio Vázquez, Dani de Morón and Alfredo Lagos in solo guitar, and singers Jesús Méndez, Manuel Lombo, Márquez el Zapatero and Antonio Ruiz el Carpintero. Flamenco en la Frontera also has a strong program of instructional activities. In fact, the basis of the offering is the series of dance, cante, guitar, compás, palmas and cante accompaniment that the Seville school Taller Flamenco has designed for the occasion, and which includes teachers Pepe Torres and Lidia Valle for dance, Dani de Morón and Michelle Iacarino for guitar, and Moisés Cano for cante accompaniment, compás and palmas. These course will be held in morning and afternoon sessions at the Casa de la Cultura of the Fundación Fernando Villalón. Registration is open as of July 18th. The program of courses is rounded out by a conference series featuring flamenco journalists and investigators Pedro Luis Vázquez, José Luis Ortíz Nuevo, Estela Zatania and Silvia Calado, scheduled to take place in the historic setting of the bodega of the Casa de la Cilla in the Plaza de la Victoria. One of the festival’s priorities is to bring together a variety of disciplines one way or another related to, or inspired in flamenco. In this spirit, photographic and painting exhibits, and a series of documentaries and full-length films will be held in conjunction with the rest of the activities that make up the first edition of Flamenco en la Frontera, September 7th to 10th in Morón. CONFERENCES Within the festival a number of parallel activities are programmed, including a series of conferences given by various flamenco investigators and experts, and held in the lovely setting of the “Casa de la Cilla” in the Plaza de la Victoria.
