FIRST FLAMENCO BIENNIAL OF THE NETHERLANDS

Just when the 14th Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla has ended, the First Biennial de Flamenco de los Países Bajos, an initiative of the Fundación PerpetuumM of Amsterdam and the Centre of World Cultures RASA in Utrecht is about to be celebrated from November 6th to 12th.

This extraordinary event, the first of its kind in Holland, reflects
the growing popularity and globalization of flamenco. France has at least
two important flamenco festivals which are held in Nimes and Mont-de-Marsans
and are celebrated annually. Italy, Switzerland, England and the US are
other countries with festivals that feature the biggest current stars
of flamenco.

Holland’s Biennial de Flamenco will be held in two urban centers,
Amsterdamm and Utrecht, separated by 39 kilometers (24 miles). One of
the stated objectives of the festival is to “spread the richness
of the Andalusian cultural heritage from Holland to neighboring countries
such as Belgium and Germany”. The aim is to present the whole gamut
of styles, from traditional to contemporary.

The program of shows includes names like Israel Galván in dance,
Duquende and Tomás de Perrate in cante, Miguel Ángel Cortés
and Cañizares in guitar, in addition to instrumental groups Son
de la Frontera and the Trío Benavent-Pardo-DiGeraldo. Belén
Maya, whose image adorns the official poster of the Biennial, will present
her work “Dibujos”, which is a debut in Holland. Performances
by accomplished local artists are also programed to complement and round
out the schedule.

Following the example of Spanish flamenco festivals, an interesting program
of parallel cultural activities includes conferences, documentaries, a
children’s program and a literary program in addition to workshops
and master classes in dance, cante and guitar given by the guest artists.
