On Monday June 14th the fifth edition of the Flamenco Festival Pa’ Tos gets underway, a yearly event organized by the Gomaespuma Foundation and featuring the best flamenco artists of the moment, in each of its specialties.
The express intention of the festival has always been a sort of introduction
to flamenco, “so that people who don’t know the art and
approach it for the first time, have a better idea of what it is”
said Juan Luis Cano, half of the Gomaespuma team and a great flamenco
fan.
Tickets for previous editions were free or there was a symbolic contribution,
but this led to a shortage of tickets and insufficient funds were collected
for the numerous projects in India, Nicaragua, etc. sponsored by the foundation.
For this fifth edition the artists will again perform without remuneration
except for basic expenses, and an entrance fee of 15 euros has been established.
The proceeds will go to the Gomaespuma school in Nicaragua.
Once again Juan Verdú put together an impressive bill: “We
made a big effort to strike a balance between guitar, dance and cante,
paying special attention to concert guitar, something seldom seen in other
kinds of festivals”…”and as in other years we made room
for young people like Pitingo a singer from Huelva, Rocío Molina,
a dancer who worked with Sara Baras, Canales and many others and who enjoyed
great success in the recent Festival Flamenco USA, the memory of Arturo
Pavón who will play flamenco piano to accompany his daughter Salomé
Pavón, Pepe Habichuela’s new project with his son Josemi
Carmona and other members of the group Ketama…”
As for important flamenco stars, there will Tomatito presenting his new
record “Agua Dulce”, singer Diego El Cigala, Jerónimo
who will also present his new recording, Arcángel, Niño
Josele, Duquende, the farruca of Güito, Manolote and Antonio El Pipa…
Juan Verdú adds “solo guitarists will accompany cante,
Tomatito will play for El Cigala, Niño Josele for Duquende…and
the venue couldn’t be more ideal, the Colegio de Médicos”.
