Estrella Morente, El Cigala, Farruquito, Pitingo and Tomatito, stars of the Cante de las Minas 2011.

Dancer and choreographer Blanca del Rey will give her last public performance at the 51st edition of the Festival flamenco scheduled to take place August 3rd to 13th

Within the program of cultural activities, the Cante de las Minas will posthumously pay tribute to singer Enrique Morente, winner of last year’s “Castillete de Oro”.  This was made public by Francisco Bernabé, mayor of La Unión, at the presentation of the Cante de las Minas festival for 2011, an act that once again this year was held at the legendary flamenco tablao “Corral de la Morería” in Madrid.

The 51st edition will get underway with the prologue on the so-named “Day of La Unión”, when official hymns will be interpreted, there will be a tribute to the Miner’s Wife and Miner’s Widow and an evening of “trovos”, the singing of improvised verses that will take place in the most authentic style of this mining town.

On August 4th, journalist Carlos Herrera will officially inaugurate the event with his keynote speech, and on the same day the winners of last year’s festival will perform, Miguel Ortega (Lámpara Minera), Francisco Moncayo (Bordón Minero), Jesús Fernández (Trofeo Desplante) and Abdón Alcaraz, Instrumentalist.  Tickets for the first two days are free.

The gala flamenco shows that precede the contest will feature Antonio Álvarez “Pitingo” (August 5th), Estrella Morente (August 6th), dancer Juan Manuel Fernández “Farruquito” (August 7th), guitarist José Fernández Torres “Tomatito”, dancer and choregrapher Blanca del Rey (August 8th) and singer Ramón Jiménez Salazar, Diego “El Cigala” (August 9th).

After the presentation of the galas, it was announced that the flamenco contest will be staged on August 10th, 11th and 12th, with the celebration of three semi-finals, and August 13th will see the final phase of the contest of the Festival International del Cante de las Minas, all of which will begin daily at 10:00pm in the old public market known now as the Cathedral of Cante.

CULTURAL AGENDA OF THE CANTE DE LAS MINAS
The cutural agenda consists of activities that will be celebrated every day, beginning at 8:00pmm at the Salón de Actos of the Unión town hall, in the Edicifio “Cada del Piñón” by calle Mayor, no. 55

The first of these begins August 4th with the presenting of the 3rd Catedral del Cante prize, which this years distinguishes France as the outstanding country in preserving and supporting the art of flamenco, and which will be collected by Bruno Delaye, French embassador in Spain.

In this sense, and as a result of the terrible events that have befallen upon Japan since the earthquake and tsunami of March 11th, the Fundación Cante de las Minas has decided to pay tribute to the country, winner of the 2nd Catedral del Cante in 2010, in an act which will also take place August 4th and for which the Japanese embassador in Spain, Fumiaki Takahashi has already confirmed his presence.

On August 5th the festival will posthumously honor singer Enrique Morente, winner of the 2010 Castillete de Oro, a moment that will include the performer’s family and in which the documentary, “Morente”, will be projected, a work that film-maker Emilio Ruiz Barrachina recorded with the singer only days before the latter’s unexpected and hasty goodbye.

In addition, the awarding of the “Castillete de Oro” the festival’s highest institutional honor, will this year go to three great personalities, Alejandro Sanz (August 6th), Ferrán Adriá (the 7th) and legendary Antonio Grau Mora, “Rojo el Alpargatero” (the 8th), the great patriarch of mining cante whose grandson, now over 80 and residing in Perú, will accept the honor.
