New records released onto the market can't all be the same. Some are
lively or melancholic, others provoke deep emotions, but always depending
on their musical or interpretive quality. This new recording of Juan Antonio
Santiago Salazar, better known to the world of flamenco as Enrique “El
Extremeño”, is a lighthearted offering, very much in keeping
with El Extremeño himself, departing from the depths of emotion
some artists have us accustomed to, and getting into the type of rhythmic
repertoire the younger generation demands.
Enrique's characteristic deep voice combines with melodic choruses with
Pepe de Pura, el Yeyi, José de la Bella, Ricardo “Monines”,
and with the noteworthy voice of Samara Amador, daughter of Manuela Carrasco
and Joaquín Amador, with whom Enrique “El Extremeño”
has an especially close professional friendship.
Arcángel is one of several guest artists in the song “Camiseta
de Once Varas”, in addition to such important musicians as Manolo
Nieto and the superb guitar of Pedro Sierra who also took care of the
arrangements and musical direction, all of which adds up to an entertaining
and pleasurable listen.
Of all the songs contained in the record, perhaps the least interesting
is “Corazón Loco”, a cuplé por bulerías,
different from the rest, giving the impression of having been included
as filler. Of three tangos, one is straightahead Extremaduran. Rumba,
bulerías, alegrías, jabera-rondeña, minera and martinete-toná
make up this recording which while not outstanding, is certainly enjoyable.
The title song “Soy un Pirata” includes the participation of
dancer Rafael Campallo, but this reviewer prefers two other songs: “Dime
donde estás” and “Camiseta de once varas”.
The presentation took place at Utrera's Café-Bar Central with
the attendance of friends and artists such as Martín and Juana
Revuelo and dancer Juan de Juan. Due to professional obligations Manuela
Carrasco, Joaquín Amador and Arcángel were unable to be
present.
