Pitingo, Juan M. Cañizares, Santiago Fisas, Juan Verdú, Silvia Marín, Toni el Pelao

Santiago Fisas, representative of Culture and Tourism, along with the Juan Verdú, the director of the festival, have presented the third edition of Suma Flamenca, Flamenco Festival of the Madrid Community.  On hand for the occasion were some of the artists participating in the program such as Lola Greco, Güito, Rocío Molina, Ana Salazar, Toni el Pelao, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Gerardo Núñez and María Toledo among others.

Estrella Morente will be at the Teatro Albéniz May 22nd, and the following day, the same stage will receive young singer Miguel Poveda who just received the Premio Nacional de Música 2007 in  the category of Interpretation.  On Saturday the 24th, singer Antonio Carbonell will perform with dancers José Maya and Lola Greco in the Rastro.

A double program begins the second week of the festival at this same theater.  Father and son from one of the most important families in the evolution of flamenco guitar, Pepe Habichuela and Josemi Carmona, will share a recital with 10 members of the “Joven Generación” on May 26th.  Rancapino will join forces with Son de la Frontera on the 27th, and the following day Gerardo Nuñez and Carmen Cortés will pay tribute to the legendary guitarist Sabicas, while Esperanza Fernández will present Recuerdos, her second solo album.

The shows at the Albeniz theater end May 30 and 31 with two performancees of the show Goyesca within the activities commemorating the Bicentennial of the Dos de Mayo in Madrid.  It’s based onseven paintings inspired in the origins of flamenco in the 19th century and will be interpreted by Carmen Linares, Miguel Poveda, Israel Galván, Carmen Cortés, Son de la Frontera, Rocío Molina, Fernando Terremoto, Rafael Estévez, Nani Paños, Blanca Calvo, Oscar Herrero, Alfredo Lagos and the Chirigota del Yuyu.

In addition, during the two weeks the Albéniz is hosting the festival, Paco Manzano’s photo exhibition will be on display.

France in flamenco with poetry and flamenco at Olivar
Between June 12th and 15th, the Salón de Columnas of the Círculo de Bellas Artes will receive a tribute to flamenco in France with Ana Salazar singing to Edith Piaf with the fusion of flamenco and soul music of Pitingo, the voice of young hopeful Alicia Gil who will present her new record, and Puro Flamenco with Toni “El Pelao to end up with virtuoso guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares.  In the morning of those four days, Silvia Marín will bring flamenco to the younger set with “El Flamenco en Cuatro Estaciones”.  Two of those days will be devoted to blind children and children of prison inmates.

El Olivar de Castilleja will again unite poetry and cante in the series La Música de los Espejos.  This year’s teams of poets and singers include Luis Eduardo Aute and Marina Heredia (June 2), Felipe Benítez Reyes and Arcángel (June 3), Luis García Montero and Enrique Morente (june 9) and José Luis Ortiz Nuevo and Carmen Linares (June 10).

Afterhours shows will take place at tablaos such as Corral de la Morería where on May 31st Juana la del Revuelo will appear, and at Barbieri 10 Los Canasteros María Toledo will sing on June 5th.  On June 9th the flamenco fusion of Kandela will be featured on June 9th, and on June 11th Fernando de la Morena appears at Clamores.  On May 23rd Mari Paz Lucena will dance at Espacio Flamenco, and on May 28th Las Tablas will vibrate with the cante of El Torta.   

Thirteen towns will receive the best of flamenco
The festival extends throughout the province of Madrid with 13 towns enjoying a flamenco spring.  Vicente Amigo will play at Alcalá de Henares, while Alcorcón will receive María Toledo and El Güito, who will also be at Moralzarzal and Torrejón de Ardoz.  At the José María Rodero Theater Esperanza Fernández will sing on June 15th.

Eva Yerbabuena will bring her show Santo y Seña to Aranjuez, and in Chinchón, Tomatito will evoke Camarón with his show Camaroneando.  La Cabrera will enjoy the art of Juan Manuel Mora, Talegón and Ángela Españadero, Leganés, guitarist Gerardo Núñez; and San Fernando de Henares José Menese. At the Plaza Mayor of Torrelaguna, Carmen Linares will offer her art and in San Sebastián de los Reyes maestro Serranito will play for singers Israel Paz and Paco del Pozo.
