The fifteenth edition of the Festival Caja Madrid has presented the program scheduled to kick off January 22nd with cultural activities as well as an impressive assortment of today’s best talent from the world of flamenco.
On
January 30th Diego Clavel, the much-admired veteran singer from Puebla
de Cazalla, accompanied by Antonio Carrión, shares the evening
with Carmen Linares and her group including Juan Carlos Romero among others.
The following day the traditional “Calle de Alcalá”,
reserved for artists who have developed the greatest part of their careers
in Madrid, is to be awarded this year to flamenco concert guitarist Víctor
Monge “Serranito”
who was already a well-known musician before the appearance of Paco de
Lucía, and continues to be relevant a half century later.
The same night, Miguel
Poveda will present his new CD “Tierra de Calma”, also
with Juan Carlos Romero, after extraordinary success at the recent Bienal
de Flamenco de Sevilla, and once again he is bringing guest artists Diego
Carrasco and Dorantes. The dance portion is to be covered by Rocío
Molina.
On February 1st, it’s Lebrija’s turn. In the first part,
singer Esperanza
Fernández with family ties to Lebrija, accompanied by her brother
Paco on guitar will offer her recital. In the second part, a very interesting
show linked to the memory of the late guitarist Pedro Bacán and
the book about his life of the same title: “Aluricán en Azul
y Verde”. This show, directed by Tere Peña, the sister of
Juan Peña “Lebrijano”, features noteworthy Lebrija
artists such as Inés Bacán, and Pedro Bacán’s
own son, as well as an assortment of guest artists. On February 3rd a
magnificent display of traditional cante is scheduled with the voices
of Canela de San Roque, Pansequito and José Mercé, with
equally noteworthy guitarists: Niño Jero, Diego Amaya and Moraíto.
The festival’s closing gala will be taken care of by Manuela Carrasco
and her numerous group.
Parallel cultural activities include book presentations, roundtable talks
and informal recitals with singers Luis
el Zambo, Antonio Reyes and others, and Friday the 26th, at the Casa
Encendida, young flamenco performers like singer María Ángeles
Fernández or dancer Belén López will have their opportunity.
